숫자의 힘! – 100 이라는 숫자를 통해 세계를 본다.
전세계를 100명 인구의 마을로 축소시켜 바라본 책이다.
원작은 인터넷으로 퍼진 이메일 메시지였는데, 이것을 조금 더 정확한 통계 자료와 내용 수정을 통해 책으로 정리 했다고 한다. (원작은 Donella Meadows 박사(1941-2001)의 ‘세계마을 현황 보고’라고 알려져 있다.)
현재 우리가 얼마나 행복하게 살고 있는지, 또한 우리가 관심을 가지고 도움을 주어야 할 세상 사람이 얼마나 많은 지에 대해 새삼 느끼게 해주는 책이다.

인터넷에 널리 퍼진 내용이라서 무심결에 누구나 한 번쯤 봤음직한 내용이다.
생각보다 다양한 종교(무교 포함) 분포, 생각보다 심한 부의 편중, 생각보다 심각한 교육 불평등, 생각보다 처참한 기아와 전쟁, 폭력의 폐혜 등을 느끼게 해준다.
(100명의 사람 중 단 한명이 대학 교육을 받았고, 단 한명이 컴퓨터를 소유하고 있다!)
이 글을 쓸 수 있고, 볼 수 있는 사람은 무척 행복한 사람이라는 것을 느끼게 함과 동시에 그렇지 못한 사람에 대한 관심이 절실히 필요하다는 것도 다시 한번 생각하게 해준다.

원작인 ‘마을의 현황보고 – 세계가 만일 1000명의 마을이라면..,’을 싣고 있다. 100 이라는 숫자가 ‘직관’을 주긴 하지만, 1 (%) 이하의 작은 수는 묻어 버리는 단점이 있다. 1000 이라는 숫자는 이러한 단점을 조금 보완해 줄 수 있는 것 같다. 또한 이해인, 한비야, 서홍관, 더글러스 루미즈 씨의 따뜻한 글이 담겨 있다. 그리고, 책 후반에는 이 책에 사용된 통계 항목들의 정확한 현재 수치와 자료 출처를 확인할 수 있다.
3권 – 음식편
우리가 살아가는 데 꼭 필요한 음식, 영양을 주제로 한다. 세계 곳곳에서는 기아로 고통받는 이들이 있지만, 다른 쪽에서는 비만과 음식물 쓰레기 때문에 문제가 되는 현실을 여실히 보여 준다. 또한 세계 식량 원조 활동에 대해 간략히 소개함으로써 세상에 대한 우리의 관심이 얼마나 필요한 지와 일반인이 참여해 도움을 줄 수 있는 방법들을 소개한다.

14 from the Western Hemisphere, both north and south

52 would be female
48 would be male
70 would be non-white
30 would be white
70 would be non-Christian
30 would be Christian
89 would be heterosexual
11 would be homosexual
6 people would possess 59% of the entire world’s wealth
and all 6 would be from the United States.
80 would live in substandard housing
70 would be unable to read
50 would suffer from malnutrition
1 would be near death; 1 would be near birth
1 (yes, only 1) would have a college education
1 would own a computer
When one considers our world from such a compressed perspective, the need for acceptance,
understanding and education becomes glaringly aparent.
The following is also something to ponder…..
If you woke up this morning with more health than illness….
you are more blessed than the million who will not survive this week.
If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment,
the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation….
you are ahead of 500 million people in the world.
If you can attend a chrch meeting without fear of harassment, arrest, torture, or death…
you are more blessed than three billion people in the world.
If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep…
you are richer than 75% of this world.
If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace…
you are among the top 8% of the world’s wealthy.
If your parents are still alive and still maried…
you are very rare, even in th United State and Canada.
If you can read this message, you just received a doulble blessing in that someone was thinking of you, and furthermore, you are more blessed than over two billion people in the world that cannot read at all.

Sooooo…
Work like you don’t need the money.
Love like you’ve never been hurt.
Dance like nobody’s watching.
Sing like nobody’s listening.
Like like it’s Heaven on Earth.
